The Wanderers: Tracking Planets

The word "planet" comes from the Greek planetes - "wanderer." Unlike stars, which stay fixed relative to each other, planets slowly drift against the starry background, week by week, month by month. You can see five of them with your naked eyes - Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. These are the same five that humans have watched since prehistory. They are also five of the nine Navagraha, which we'll learn about in Week 2.

Two key concepts help you find and understand planets. Magnitude tells you how bright something is. Lower numbers mean brighter. Venus is often around magnitude -4 (blazingly bright). Saturn is around +1 (modest). Stars in the faintest constellations are around +5 or +6. Elongation is the angular distance from the Sun. A planet with elongation near 0ยฐ is lost in the Sun's glare - you cannot see it no matter how bright it is. The best views come at large elongation (for Mercury and Venus) or at opposition - when elongation reaches 180ยฐ, meaning the planet is directly opposite the Sun in the sky and visible all night (for Mars, Jupiter, Saturn).

Planets are either evening stars (visible after sunset, in the western sky) or morning stars (visible before sunrise, in the eastern sky) depending on where they are in their orbit relative to the Sun.

Today's exercise: Open Planet Tracker. Find tonight's brightest planet. Note its magnitude, its direction, and when it sets. Go outside and find it. Remember: planets don't twinkle. That steady point of light - that's a whole world, reflecting sunlight.
After today: You know which planets are visible tonight, what magnitude and elongation mean, and you've spotted at least one planet in the real sky.
