Get away from city lights — the Milky Way requires dark skies (Bortle 4 or darker). The galactic center is brightest in Sagittarius, low on the southern horizon from northern latitudes. Give your eyes 20+ minutes to dark-adapt. A moonless night near new moon is ideal.
