On a dark, clear night away from city lights, you can see the Milky Way - a luminous band stretching across the sky. Indian tradition calls it Akasha Ganga - the Celestial Ganges, a river of stars flowing through the heavens. What you're actually seeing is the disk of our own galaxy viewed edge-on from inside. Our galaxy contains roughly 200-400 billion stars.
The brightest, most dramatic part is the galactic centre, which lies in the direction of Sagittarius - low on the southern horizon from Indian latitudes. But you can't see it anytime. You need three things to align: (1) The galactic centre must be above the horizon - it's only well-placed during certain months. (2) Astronomical twilight must have ended - the sky must be truly dark, not just post-sunset dim. (3) The Moon must be below the horizon - a bright Moon washes out the Milky Way completely. And underlying all of this: you need dark skies, Bortle 4 or darker.
