Where to Look

Finding North Without a Compass

Northern Hemisphere

Find the Big Dipper (Saptarishi). The two stars at the end of the "bowl" point to Polaris (Dhruva Tara), the North Star. Polaris is always within 1° of true north.

Southern Hemisphere

Find the Southern Cross (Crux). Extend the long axis 4.5 times its length toward the horizon — that point is approximately due south.

Using the Sun

The Sun rises roughly east and sets roughly west. At solar noon, it is due south (northern hemisphere) or due north (southern hemisphere).

Calibration: If the compass seems inaccurate, move your phone in a figure-8 pattern several times. Keep away from magnets, speakers, and metal objects.
